Desde el nacimiento y a lo largo de la vida, la madera y sus derivados están muy presentes en el día a día de las personas. En las cunas, en los juguetes, en puertas, ventanas, muebles, en la generación de energía, sin hablar de la celulosa, papel y sus derivados, además de resinas, pinturas, colas y otros productos. Según datos de la FAO (Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura), considerando a toda la población del planeta, el consumo de madera en el mundo es de 3.500 millones de m³/año, lo que equivale a 875.000 km² de bosque sembrado. Esto significa 122 millones de campos de fútbol.

La estimación es que seamos 9 mil millones de personas en el mundo en 2050, lo que puede duplicar y hasta triplicar la demanda de madera, según indica la Industria Brasileña de Árboles (Ibá). Para suplir esa demanda, en un escenario de bajo carbono, energías renovables y deforestación neta cero, estudios indican que serán necesarios 250 millones de hectáreas adicionales de bosques sembrados en el mundo, de acuerdo con información disponible en el sitio web de la Ibá (infográfico Múltiples Usos de la Madera).

Sembrar bosques renovables, por lo tanto, es fundamental para suplir la demanda de madera, preservando los bosques naturales. Hoy, en Brasil, para cada hectárea de bosque sembrado hay 0,7 hectáreas de áreas naturales preservadas. En Chile, por ejemplo, hay 0,25 hectáreas preservadas para cada una sembrada y 0,05 hectáreas en Australia (fuente: Ibá). Según datos de la Empresa Brasileña de Investigación Agropecuaria (Embrapa), la vegetación nativa preservada ocupa un 61% del territorio brasileño, índice que supera en mucho el área preservada de países de África, Asia y Europa.

Los bosques sembrados tienen un papel importante para ayudar a conservar la vegetación nativa. Además de ser importantes desde el punto de vista ambiental, la actividad es relevante para la economía, genera empleo y renta. Y Brasil está a la vanguardia de esta área, desarrollando tecnologías que lo ponen de relieve a los ojos del mundo cuando el asunto es productividad y sostenibilidad de los bosques sembrados.

Es importante resaltar que algunas áreas de bosques renovables cultivadas aquí vienen utilizando la misma tierra desde hace 50 años. Gracias al mejoramiento genético y a las técnicas de manejo, las empresas productoras de bosques están buscando –y vienen consiguiendo− producir más madera en áreas menores.

La tecnología es una aliada importante en ese proceso, ya sea en el campo de la producción o en el campo de la gestión. Los avances tecnológicos, como el mejoramiento genético y prácticas de manejo más productivas, además de tecnologías como la agricultura de precisión, la realidad virtual y otros recursos cada día más presentes en la vida de las personas, han permitido el desarrollo de software de gestión que traen soluciones de vanguardia para el sector.

Y es así que el cultivo de bosques renovables en Brasil viene contribuyendo a preservar casi 6 millones de hectáreas de áreas naturales y a colocar al país a la vanguardia de este sector de la economía.
